A WARM WELCOME

Thank you very much Dr. Arunabha Sen.

Now for next months guest. I am trying something different. I am trying to introduce our students and their capabilities to you 'all.

May 12, 2009 speaker -- Let's give a warm welcome to Research Assistant, PhD candidate, Harrington Department of Bioengineering -- Venkat Shankarraman.

His talk is titled --

“Understanding thrombosis - A need to design biomaterials.”

Despite decades of research, synthetic blood-contacting materials elicit undesirable responses such as thrombosis. However, natural materials including the “basement membrane”, which underlies the cells that line the vascular wall, works well for decades without recruiting thrombosis. In this talk we will be looking into how the properties of the biomaterial are discerned by the endothelial cells, converted to intracellular signals and further transformed into desirable behaviors that prevent thrombosis. This information provides insight into how engineers can reverse-engineer the attributes of such natural materials.

We will meet at the CRAVE Bar & Lounge, on Mill Ave, starting around 5:30 PM.

June 9, 2009 -- The speaker is Ken Polasko, Vice President of Business Development, Physical Sciences, Arizona Technology Enterprises (AZTe), the patent arm of ASU. He will be talking about the "NEW" AZTe.

August 11, 2009-- Dan O'Neill, Director, Entrepreneurship and Research Initiatives, ASU SkySong.

His topic -- Entrepreneurs develop a business plan to articulate their thinking about their venture, and to attract investors, employees, partners and customers to the venture. Come learn how ASU Technopolis instructors have helped thousands of innovators and entrepreneurs learn to develop their plan and tell their venture story in a compelling way.

Thanks again to the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICE of the CITY of TEMPE and a great big THANK YOU to the ARIZONA TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL.
